Home Treatment for Onychomycosis: Can Vicks Vaporub Really Cure Toenail Fungus?

Blogger Olga Boyko recalls the story of the summer she used Vicks VapoRub to cure the toenail fungus that afflicted her big toe. She showered and scrubbed the nail, then applied the medication, put a cotton sock over it, and went to sleep. In the morning after her shower, she tried to apply the medication again, but the infected portion of the nail started to peel off. “To this day, it’s the nastiest thing that has ever happened to me,” she wrote.

She reportedly applied the VapoRub anyway and continued to do so — twice a day — for several months. Despite the malady, she wore open-toe shoes to prevent fungus from taking hold inside damp, dark shoes. After three or four months, a healthy nail grew back. The internet is full of interesting stories like this one, alleging that Vicks VapoRub is an effective home remedy for toenail fungus. But is there any evidence backing this solution for a medical condition that is notoriously chronic and hard-to-treat?

Embarrassing Foot Problems You May Not Want to Discuss with Your Doctor: Toenail Fungus

Annual wellness visits with a physician are meant to be a time to air all of one’s medical questions, cares, and concerns with a professional. However, many of us freeze up when we see the doctor’s smiling happy face — and, when posed with the question, “How are you?” we immediately launch into the scripted, “Fine” or “Good” response. We may be willing to discuss back pain or inflammation, but when it comes to feet, many people are squeamish. This blog is not designed to replace medical advice from your physician. However, you may feel more comfortable bringing up embarrassing foot problems once you’re more familiar with them. We will take a look at a few different conditions among several posts, with today’s focusing on toenail fungus.

Social Media Gag Alert: Do All Your Facebook Friends Have Foot Fungus?

This week, one of my relatives wrote a Facebook status that said, “How do you get rid of foot fungus?” What luck! I thought. I write about this every single day! Finally, I can use all this knowledge to help someone I know! I was one of sixteen people who offered up suggestions, although mine was admittedly the most zealous…

Self-diagnosis mat not only be costly, but it exposes patients to a lot of unnecessary side effects and does not treat the real problem. According to Dr. Robert A. Silverman, a pediatric dermatologist at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, there are three conditions often mistaken for toenail fungus.

Natural Healing: Can Neem Oil Be Used to Treat Pesky Foot Fungus?

Foot fungus can be a terrible problem for a person who is dedicated to holistic healing and natural remedies. The usual course of treatment for toenail fungus involves heavy duty oral antifungal medication which can be considerably expensive. Athlete’s foot is a bit easier to treat with an over-the-counter topical, but it still tends to resist natural cures and can become a persistent problem. Neem oil is one of the products we’ve seen pitched to treat foot fungus, so this post serves to look into the matter further.

Onychomycosis in the Spotlight: Toenail Fungus Featured on Television Show "The Doctors"

Recently, the popular television show The Doctors had an episode about “awkward and embarrassing body problems.” There were audience members seeking advice on explosive diarrhea, bad tattoos of ex-boyfriends, lost tampons, and a woman with severe toenail fungus. While we may not particularly enjoy talking about these issues, the doctors wanted to make the point that patients should share their most embarrassing questions, concerns, and stories with health professionals in order to remain as healthy as possible.

Protection for Tiny Toes: Fungal Nail Infections Increasing in Children

Toenail fungus is relatively uncommon in children, but recently pediatricians have been seeing a rise in young patients with foot fungus. They attribute the increased incidence of fungal nail infections in children to several factors. For starters, tiny tikes are often ambulating in closed-toe shoes, which trap heat and moisture to create the ideal breeding ground for fungal spores. Another underlying factor is the amount of foot trauma sustained by active children who are frequently outdoors playing sports. Also, some families have a genetic propensity to develop fungal nail infections. Very young children under two years of age may develop a fungal nail infection due to prematurity, immunocompromise, or Down Syndrome.

Misconceptions Regarding Foot Conditions: Toenail Fungus Is Not Exclusive to Older Generations

“I have ugly toe nail fungus since almost 3 years now. I am just 31 years old and I heard that mostly old people get it,” writes an anonymous onychomycosis sufferer in the Berkeley Parents Network forum.  It’s a popular misconception that toenail fungus is an “old person’s condition.” The truth is, Americans old and young can get toenail fungus. While it’s not a life-threatening condition, the fact that toenail fungus affects 10% of the general population makes it a nuisance.

Natural Healing: Could Mediterranean Bath Salts Work to Cure Toenail Fungus?

The SteriShoe UV shoe sanitizer was created with toenail fungus sufferers in mind. Our product’s founder understands, first hand, what it’s like to spend countless days and dollars fighting the unsightly infection. Foot fungus is particularly difficult to eliminate because of its mode for reproduction. Teeny, tiny spores have a way of sloughing off the feet and contaminating everything from towels and bed sheets, to socks and shoes. So even if you’ve managed to successfully kill the fungus, you risk re-contamination if you’re putting your feet back into the same old infected shoes again.

That’s why, no matter which treatment you choose, you’re best investing in our Ultra-Violet shoe sanitizer to kill off the residual fungus in all your footwear. If you’re looking for other natural remedies for foot fungus, you may also want to consider Mediterranean bath salts.

Is It "Thyme" for Toenail Fungus Treatment? Exploring the Effectiveness of this Natural Remedy

“It’s not exactly a life-threatening condition, but toenail fungus, known in the medical community as onychomycosis, can be cosmetically unattractive and painful,” reports Anahad O’Connor, a science feature writer for the NY Times. Several years back, he investigated thyme as a possible holistic toenail fungus cure. We’re naturally skeptical of these claims because toenail fungus is notoriously difficult and expensive to treat, but in some cases there is some scientific basis behind these folk remedies.
